Superstar India: From Incredible To Unstoppable by Shobhaa De: Book review (NaBloPoMo Post 19)

May 24, 2009

“This is a story about India. My India. It is a very personal story. You see, I’m exactly as old as India is.”, writes Shobhaa De in the beginning of what is a run of the mill account of her view of today’s India.

I for one picked up the book for its theme, to check for myself what she has to say. This is the most done-to-death theme right now… from Slumdog to White Tiger.

I have never read any of De’s books before; only read her columns sporadically. This is her first book that I decided to give a perusal, and I must say, I’m disappointed. The book hops from one topic to another without making a point. The economic miracle, Indian cultural values, grand Indian weddings, poverty, sex, male chauvinism, Mumbai’s amazing spirit, the author writes on it all, without staying on a topic long enough or articulately enough to create an impression. There is nothing new she has to tell. We have read it all so many times – problems concerning India: the growing divide between the affluent and the underprivileged and similar stuff.

However, in the author’s defense, I would say that it’s all fun. The writing style is easy and smooth. Read it only if you have nothing better to do.

Well, I like how you in a nutshell described the book. In my personal opinion, though she is a great writer, her stuff has more question marks than solutions. I love reading stuff with solutions rather.
Im also trying to figure out what NaBloPoMo stands for….. Im sure, its something with the number of posts for may? Is it?

Shobha De knows as much about Real India as much as George V knew about his American territories.

You can’t expect anything better from Ms.De. She is, what I would call, a Bus Ride novelist. Her views are shallow. Her ideologies, superficial. And there is nothing that I would particularly buy-in from her writing – fiction or otherwise. You can’t even call her writing style brilliant. But she keeps good company in what would otherwise be a mundane one hour bus ride from home to work and back. Easy reading, she doesn’t make me run for the dictionary at the turn of a page. So, she’s what I would rather be seen holding than a Filmfare or a Stardust in public.

Btw, I always thought Google killed serendipity. Good to see someone trying to keep that alive. I like. :)

In any case she is not an author who adds to a new understanding of the world…arundhati roy, jhumpa lahiri she is not…

her attraction is the way whe writes, as you pointed out…

but you see, the best thing about it is that she never pretended otherwise. She never claimed that she should be in the running for booker prize. Its her opinions that people read and many times, they are refreshing…
